How to choose your attitude
Recently, I've been thinking about exactly how to teach
people to choose their attitudes.
I came up with the following method that you can
practice on your own.
First, pick a challenging situation.
I chose my attitude about planning my day since I
don't seem to do it.
Second, brainstorm different attitudes you could have
about this situation.
I decided that I could feel bored by planning, I could
be excited about the possibilities of the day, I could
be fearful that I won't make the right decisions, I
could be curious about what I'll come up with, I could
feel empowered by my ability to plan.
Third, try on each attitude in your imagination to see
which one you like best.
After trying on the various attitudes I came up with I
decided that I'd like to feel empowered by my ability
to plan.
Fourth, imagine using your new attitude in the future.
So I imagined that tomorrow when my day begins I'll
start planning. And I imagine myself feeling empowered
by planning.
That's really all there is to it.
The reason I suggest comming up with several options in
step 2 is that when you do you'll find that it becomes
more real to you that you do have a choice of
attitudes.
If you only think, I can feel good or bad sometimes
those choices aren't enough to awaken that part of you
that can choose your attitudes.
So try this technique at least three times over the
next few days and let me know what happens for you.
